Trophic strategies of two sympatric endemic pigeons in insular ecosystems: a framework for understanding spatiotemporal frugivory interactions

چکیده
Pigeons are considered to play key ecological roles in frugivory and seed dispersal. They have colonised numerous oceanic islands diversified into several species sympatry. How these coexist similar niches is poorly understood although dietary separation among the mechanisms suggested avoid trophic overlap. We investigated ecology of two endemic Columba co-occurring laurel forest thermosclerophyllous relicts Canary Islands. This study includes diet description spatiotemporal terms, its relationship with fruit availability treatment 10 areas established on La Palma Gomera. used non-invasive DNA analysis identify faeces congeneric microhistological methods examine their diets. The degree overlap was evaluated by niche similarity breadth indices. Molecular faecal sampling determined distribution both pigeons coexistence. These frugivorous pigeons' diets did not differ concerning main plant species, but they diverged quantitatively proportions parts plants consumed. Lauraceae fruits were staple foods Rhamnaceae some Fabaceae Solanaceae also important. Both showed selective preferences for fruits. Significant variations observed along a general tendency increase intake at ripening times. Our results suggest that different strategies facilitate coexistence columbids. act as dispersers and/or predators depending features (size hardness), this may valuable implications conservation.

Complex Trophic Interactions in Kelp Forest Ecosystems
The distributions and abundances of species and populations change almost continuously. Understanding the processes responsible is perhaps ecology s̓ most fundamental challenge. Overhunting and recovery of sea otters caused the earlier shifts. Studies focus...
متن کاملTrophic diversity in two grassland ecosystems
The roles of consumers (top-down forces) versus resources (bottom-up forces) as determinants of alpha diversity in a community are not well studied. Numerous community ecology models and empirical studies have provided a framework for understanding how density at various trophic levels responds to variation in the relative strength of top-down and bottom-up forces. The resulting trophic theory ...
